Za drvenu građu jedrenjaka od šezdesetak metara dužine, tipičnog za kraj 18. stoljeća, trebalo je oko 6000 stabala, od čega, barem jedna trećina, hrastova. Barem, jer bilo je i brodova za koje je potrošeno puno više hrastovine nego ostalog drva.
Tako je 90% drva za gradnju HMS Victory, porinutog 1765. bila hrastovina. Krajem 18. stoljeća Britanska ratna mornarica je imala flotu od 300 brodova za čiju je gradnju posječeno 1,2 milijuna hrastovih stabala.
