U novom istraživanju koje redefinira naše razumijevanje utjecaja virusa na okoliš, međunarodni tim istraživača, uključujući znanstvenike s Instituta Ruđer Bošković (IRB), otkrio je ključnu ulogu virusa u ciklusu metana na Zemlji. Rezultati istraživanja objavljeni su u časopisu Nature Communications i predstavljaju važan napredak u znanosti o okolišu, ilustrirajući složenu interakciju između mikroorganizama, virusa i stakleničkih plinova.

- Zamislite Zemlju kao ogromnu, ugodnu kuću u kojoj svi živimo. Sada zamislite metan kao jedan od onih stvarno učinkovitih plinova za grijanje koji održava toplinu u našoj kući. Kada previše pojačamo grijanje, unutar kuće postaje neugodno toplo, a takav rast temperature na Zemlji doprinosi onome što nazivamo globalnim zagrijavanjem.

U ovoj golemoj kući postoji bezbroj sićušnih organizama, koji pomažu u upravljanju razinama metana, bilo da ga proizvode ili konzumiraju. Tako mikroorganizmi utječu na razine metana u atmosferi. Zbog ovih funkcija, pažnja znanstvenika donedavno je bila usmjerena na bakterije i arheje, no novo istraživanje u fokus dovodi viruse koji inficiraju mikroorganizme uključene u reguliranje ciklus metana- poručuju iz Ruđera. 

Naime, virusi su odigrali ključnu ulogu u razvoju svih ekoloških, biogeokemijskih i evolucijskih procesa na Zemlji, no tek je nedavno započelo istraživanje njihove povezanosti s klimatskim promjenama.

Otkriće iz dubina Vranskog jezera

Analizom gotovo 1 000 metagenoma iz različitih staništa, poput jezerskih sedimenata pa sve do unutrašnjosti kravljeg želuca, znanstvenici su otkrili da virusi nose specijalizirane genetske alate, poznate pod nazivom pomoćni metabolički geni.

"Ovi geni omogućuju virusima da utječu na to kako njihovi mikrobni domaćini djeluju na ciklus metana, potencijalno mijenjajući ukupnu ravnotežu ovog stakleničkog plina u našoj atmosferi," rekao je dr. sc. Sandi Orlić s IRB-a, jedan od glavnih autora na radu s IRB-a. 

Jedno od ključnih mjesta koje je tim odabrao za svoje istraživanje je Park prirode Vransko jezero. Fokusirali su se na sedimente bogate metanom i otkrili raznoliku zajednicu virusa koji su uglavnom ciljali mikrobe uključene u ciklus metana.

‘‘U jezerskom sedimentu bogatom metanom otkrili smo raznolike zajednice virusa i identificirali 13 vrsta pomoćnih metaboličkih gena koji pomažu u regulaciji metabolizma njihovih domaćina. Unatoč ovim otkrićima, nema dokaza da ti virusi izravno kodiraju gene metabolizma metana, što ukazuje na to da potencijalni utjecaj virusa na ciklus metana varira ovisno o njihovom staništu‘‘, objasnio je dr. sc. Sandi Orlić.

U novom istraživanju koje redefinira naše razumijevanje utjecaja virusa na okoliš, međunarodni tim istraživača, uključujući znanstvenike s Instituta Ruđer Bošković (IRB), otkrio je ključnu ulogu virusa u ciklusu metana na Zemlji. Rezultati istraživanja objavljeni su u časopisu Nature Communications i predstavljaju važan napredak u znanosti o okolišu, ilustrirajući složenu interakciju između mikroorganizama, virusa i stakleničkih plinova.

- Zamislite Zemlju kao ogromnu, ugodnu kuću u kojoj svi živimo. Sada zamislite metan kao jedan od onih stvarno učinkovitih plinova za grijanje koji održava toplinu u našoj kući. Kada previše pojačamo grijanje, unutar kuće postaje neugodno toplo, a takav rast temperature na Zemlji doprinosi onome što nazivamo globalnim zagrijavanjem.

U ovoj golemoj kući postoji bezbroj sićušnih organizama, koji pomažu u upravljanju razinama metana, bilo da ga proizvode ili konzumiraju. Tako mikroorganizmi utječu na razine metana u atmosferi. Zbog ovih funkcija, pažnja znanstvenika donedavno je bila usmjerena na bakterije i arheje, no novo istraživanje u fokus dovodi viruse koji inficiraju mikroorganizme uključene u reguliranje ciklus metana- poručuju iz Ruđera. 

Naime, virusi su odigrali ključnu ulogu u razvoju svih ekoloških, biogeokemijskih i evolucijskih procesa na Zemlji, no tek je nedavno započelo istraživanje njihove povezanosti s klimatskim promjenama.

Otkriće iz dubina Vranskog jezera

Analizom gotovo 1 000 metagenoma iz različitih staništa, poput jezerskih sedimenata pa sve do unutrašnjosti kravljeg želuca, znanstvenici su otkrili da virusi nose specijalizirane genetske alate, poznate pod nazivom pomoćni metabolički geni.

"Ovi geni omogućuju virusima da utječu na to kako njihovi mikrobni domaćini djeluju na ciklus metana, potencijalno mijenjajući ukupnu ravnotežu ovog stakleničkog plina u našoj atmosferi," rekao je dr. sc. Sandi Orlić s IRB-a, jedan od glavnih autora na radu s IRB-a. 

Jedno od ključnih mjesta koje je tim odabrao za svoje istraživanje je Park prirode Vransko jezero. Fokusirali su se na sedimente bogate metanom i otkrili raznoliku zajednicu virusa koji su uglavnom ciljali mikrobe uključene u ciklus metana.

‘‘U jezerskom sedimentu bogatom metanom otkrili smo raznolike zajednice virusa i identificirali 13 vrsta pomoćnih metaboličkih gena koji pomažu u regulaciji metabolizma njihovih domaćina. Unatoč ovim otkrićima, nema dokaza da ti virusi izravno kodiraju gene metabolizma metana, što ukazuje na to da potencijalni utjecaj virusa na ciklus metana varira ovisno o njihovom staništu‘‘, objasnio je dr. sc. Sandi Orlić.

Znanstvenici s "Ruđera" u Parku prirode Vransko jezero otkrili važnu zajednicu raznolikih virusa, evo o čemu se radi

U novom istraživanju koje redefinira naše razumijevanje utjecaja virusa na okoliš, međunarodni tim istraživača, uključujući znanstvenike s Instituta Ruđer Bošković (IRB), otkrio je ključnu ulogu virusa u ciklusu metana na Zemlji. Rezultati istraživanja objavljeni su u časopisu Nature Communications i predstavljaju važan napredak u znanosti o okolišu, ilustrirajući složenu interakciju između mikroorganizama, virusa i stakleničkih plinova.

- Zamislite Zemlju kao ogromnu, ugodnu kuću u kojoj svi živimo. Sada zamislite metan kao jedan od onih stvarno učinkovitih plinova za grijanje koji održava toplinu u našoj kući. Kada previše pojačamo grijanje, unutar kuće postaje neugodno toplo, a takav rast temperature na Zemlji doprinosi onome što nazivamo globalnim zagrijavanjem.

U ovoj golemoj kući postoji bezbroj sićušnih organizama, koji pomažu u upravljanju razinama metana, bilo da ga proizvode ili konzumiraju. Tako mikroorganizmi utječu na razine metana u atmosferi. Zbog ovih funkcija, pažnja znanstvenika donedavno je bila usmjerena na bakterije i arheje, no novo istraživanje u fokus dovodi viruse koji inficiraju mikroorganizme uključene u reguliranje ciklus metana- poručuju iz Ruđera. 

Naime, virusi su odigrali ključnu ulogu u razvoju svih ekoloških, biogeokemijskih i evolucijskih procesa na Zemlji, no tek je nedavno započelo istraživanje njihove povezanosti s klimatskim promjenama.

Otkriće iz dubina Vranskog jezera

Analizom gotovo 1 000 metagenoma iz različitih staništa, poput jezerskih sedimenata pa sve do unutrašnjosti kravljeg želuca, znanstvenici su otkrili da virusi nose specijalizirane genetske alate, poznate pod nazivom pomoćni metabolički geni.
